With spring in full swing things have been a little crazy. Things at the Scantic Valley Antique Engine Club are no different.
We ended winter with a work day there were 10-12 members that got together in my shop to put a 1912 Christensen Engine back together and attempt to run it. We learned some things that day, not all old hardware is good, and Jerry’s donuts are better than any other. That aside I have always believed that old hardware is usually much better than today’s. This project proved that theory wrong, we had a connecting rod bolt brake with no effort at all and a wrist pin retainer bolt break deep in the piston with little to no force on it. Upon closer inspection the connecting rod bolts were obviously over tightened and stretched, but the wrist pin retainer bolt showed no signs of trouble. With some time drilling, easy-outs and determination these issues were overcome and the engine came to life a few weeks after with the help of a couple of members that did some intricate machining to make a new mixture needle and throttle/ needle valve for the carburetor. A good time was had by all and we will do another one of these next winter.
Plow Day was held on a rainy 4/27/19 at the Rothe Farm. Many thanks to the Rothe family for hosting us and the Winn team for cooking. We had a fraction of the tractors as we normally do and operators ranging from 10 years old to 85 but we still managed to plow almost the entire field. (if there were a couple of Ford instead of Olivers on the field we would have finished.) We had Farmalls, Allis Chalmers, and Olivers this year ranging from 1938 to 1966, single bottoms to four or five bottoms. It was a wet and chilly day but everyone who attended had a good time.
Our Show is the next big event and we need your help. Please come to show, work, or just support the club. Most needed are show workers, John Bajumpaa has the task list and we need some names on it. Exhibitors are just as important. Please consider bring some of your treasures down for the paying public to see. And don’t forget to talk your buddy into doing the same thing. Remember this is one of the events that you do not need to be a member of the club to participate in.
One final note, we are forming a Steering Committee to help our club survive and flourish in this modern world we are in. John Bajumpaa has been very busy and done a great job with the web site updates and posts to Facebook lately. However the leadership and others in the club have concerns about the future and frankly are unsure how to deal with it. We are asking for 5-6 positive minded thinkers to come together every couple of months to start brainstorming ideas that will help us continue to be a great little organization well into the future. Please if you have any interest in this contact me so we can start to work on this.
That’s all for now, thank you and be safe on the show trail
